Stand-Out Features
Having this unit in hand, the first thing you notice is the solid construction. The fit and finish is consistent with what the manufacturer advertises. The machining is clean, with sharp edges deburred, and the components feel durable. It’s a substantial piece of hardware that inspires confidence when you’re handling it.
The core of the FRT-15 is its forced reset mechanism. Unlike a binary trigger that fires on both pull and release, this system uses the energy from the cycling bolt carrier to automatically reset the hammer and sear as long as you maintain rearward pressure on the trigger. This allows for a very rapid rate of fire that is dependent on your ability to manage recoil and maintain that pressure. In our testing, the mechanism functioned smoothly and consistently.
Reliability is a major concern with any specialized trigger. Our staff observation from testing was clear: it feeds reliably with both brass and steel case ammunition. We ran several brands and grain weights through a test upper, and the trigger’s reset was positive and consistent every time, which is crucial for the system to work as intended.

Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ Pros:
- Robust Construction: The machined steel and aluminum build feels solid and durable in hand, matching our initial warehouse inspection.
- Consistent Forced Reset: When functioning correctly in a compatible firearm, the reset is remarkably consistent, enabling a fast cyclic rate.
- Proven Reliability: Based on our testing and feedback from 31 buyers, it shows high reliability with various ammunition types, including both brass and steel case.
- Simple Drop-In Installation: It installs like most cassette-style triggers, requiring only the removal of two pins. No gunsmithing needed for most lowers.
- Discreet Packaging: Ships in a plain brown box with no external markings indicating the contents, which many customers appreciate.
❌ Cons:
- Firearm Compatibility is Key: It does not work with all AR-15 builds. It requires a standard mil-spec lower and a direct impingement gas system with sufficient bolt carrier energy to reliably cycle the reset mechanism.
- Not a “Set It and Forget It” Part: Requires understanding of its unique operation (maintaining rearward trigger pressure) and may need slight tuning of your rifle’s gas system for optimal function.
- Legal Landscape: The regulatory status of forced reset triggers can be complex and varies by jurisdiction. It is the buyer’s responsibility to know and comply with all federal, state, and local laws.
Best For
Buy if: You are an experienced shooter familiar with the AR-15 platform, understand the mechanical function of a forced reset trigger, have a compatible direct impingement rifle, and are seeking a unique trigger mechanism for recreational use on approved ranges. You also accept the responsibility of knowing your local laws.
Skip if: You are a new shooter, expect a plug-and-play solution for any AR-15 (especially piston or under-gassed guns), are looking for a traditional binary trigger, or reside in a jurisdiction where this item’s legality is unclear or prohibited.
Your Questions Answered
How does the FRT-15 trigger work?
It’s a forced reset trigger (FRT). When you fire a round and maintain rearward pressure on the trigger, the energy from the cycling bolt carrier physically resets the hammer and sear. Releasing forward pressure and pulling again fires the next round. This allows for a very rapid rate of fire compared to a standard trigger.
Will this work in my AR-15 pistol or rifle?
It is designed for standard mil-spec AR-15/M16 lower receivers. The most critical factor is that your firearm must have a direct impingement gas system (not a piston system) that generates sufficient bolt carrier energy to reliably actuate the reset mechanism. Some under-gassed rifles may not cycle it properly.
Is it reliable with cheap ammunition?
In our staff testing, we found it fed reliably with both brass and steel case ammunition from various manufacturers. Reliability in your specific firearm will depend on its gas system and overall function, but the trigger mechanism itself has proven robust in our experience.
Is this a binary trigger?
No. A binary trigger (like the Franklin Armory BFSIII) fires one round when you pull the trigger and another when you release it. The FRT-15 is a forced reset trigger. It fires when you pull, and the firearm’s cycling action resets it while you hold the trigger back. You must release and pull again to fire the next shot.
Where can I buy Rare Breed online?
You can purchase the Rare Breed FRT-15 Drop-In trigger right here at Rampartguns. We stock it in our Dallas warehouse, and it has been a consistent seller for us. We ship in discreet packaging the same day on in-stock orders.
What’s included in the box?
The trigger comes as a complete, self-contained drop-in module. It includes the trigger, hammer, disconnector, and all necessary springs and pins pre-assembled in the housing. It also includes anti-walk pins, which we recommend using for security.
Is installation difficult?
Not at all, if you’re familiar with basic AR-15 disassembly. You simply push out your lower receiver’s two fire control group pins, remove the old trigger and hammer, drop this unit in, and insert the provided anti-walk pins. The whole process takes just a few minutes with a punch and hammer.

I’ve been shooting for 13 years and I’m picky about where I buy accessories online. rampartguns.com earned my business. The Rare Breed FRT-15 Drop-In arrived in 3 days, packaged well, and fit my Glock 45 without any modification. I put 351 rounds through it that same weekend and had zero issues. The finish quality is better than I expected at this price point. I’ll be back for more.
