Key Features
- Optics-Ready Slide – Direct-mount footprint for RMSc-pattern red dots eliminates the need for adapter plates, saving weight and preserving sight radius.
- Tritium Night Sights – Self-luminous front and rear dots deliver a clear sight picture in total darkness, critical for defensive use when ambient light fails.
- Enhanced Grip Texture – Aggressive stippling pattern on the polymer frame locks your hand in place during recoil, reducing the need to re-grip between shots.
- Thumb Safety – Manual lever lets you carry condition-one (round chambered, hammer cocked) with an added layer of control, especially for new carriers transitioning from striker-fired pistols.
- Two Magazines – Includes one flush-fit 10-round and one extended 13-round mag, giving you the choice of maximum concealment or increased capacity.
Who It’s For
This pistol is built for the concealed carrier who wants a red-dot-ready micro-compact without the bulk of a full-size duty gun. It also suits shooters who prefer a manual safety for extra peace of mind during appendix or pocket carry. If you train with optics and demand factory night sights from the box, this is your rig.
Pros & Cons
- Pro: Optics-ready slide with no plate needed – saves $30-$60 on adapter costs and keeps the optic lower to the bore axis.
- Pro: 13+1 capacity in a grip length shorter than a Glock 43X – more rounds without printing.
- Con: The thumb safety lever is small and can be hard to sweep off under stress if you have large hands or wear gloves.
Comparison: Shield Plus vs. PSA Dagger Compact vs. Glock 43X MOS
| Feature | M&P Shield Plus Optics-Ready | PSA Dagger Compact | Glock 43X MOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capacity (std mag) | 10+1 / 13+1 | 15+1 | 10+1 |
| Barrel Length | 3.1″ | 4.0″ | 3.41″ |
| Optics Mount | RMSc direct | RMRcc via plate | MOS (multiple plates) |
| Trigger Pull (approx) | 5.5 lbs | 5.5 lbs | 5.5 lbs |
| Weight (unloaded) | 19.2 oz | 21.0 oz | 18.7 oz |
| Safety | Thumb safety | None (striker) | None (striker) |
| Street Price (est.) | $446 | $380 | $520 |
The Shield Plus beats the Dagger in concealability (shorter grip and barrel) and the Glock 43X MOS in price and included night sights. The Dagger wins on capacity; the Glock offers a wider aftermarket. For pure carry utility at this price, the Shield Plus delivers the best value for optics-ready buyers.
FAQ
Does the M&P Shield Plus Optics-Ready come with mounting plates?
No. The slide is cut directly for RMSc-pattern optics (Shield RMSc, Holosun 407K/507K, Sig Romeo Zero, etc.). You do not need a plate – just screw the optic directly to the slide using the included screws.
Can I use standard Shield Plus holsters with the optics-ready version?
Yes, but only if the holster has an open-top design or an optics cut. Most holsters made for the Shield Plus will work, but you should verify the holster is cut for a red dot to avoid retention issues.
Are the night sights co-witness with a red dot?
Yes. The factory tritium night sights are tall enough to provide a lower 1/3 co-witness with most RMSc-footprint dots. You can still use the irons if the optic fails.
Is the thumb safety reversible?
According to Smith & Wesson specs, the thumb safety is not reversible for left-handed shooters. You can remove it entirely, but the frame will have small detent holes.
