Key Features
- Integral Compensator: Three-port compensator machined into the slide reduces muzzle rise by roughly 25% per Springfield’s own testing—lets you track the front sight through fast strings.
- Optics-Ready Slide: Pre-cut for popular red-dot footprints (RMR, Holosun K, Docter/Noblex) with a cover plate included. No machining required.
- Double-Stack 9mm Grip: 20-round flush-fit magazine and a 17-round spare give you 17+1 or 20+1 capacity in a familiar 1911 grip angle. The polymer module is textured front and back.
- Forged Stainless Bull Barrel: 5-inch, 1:16 twist, ramped and fully supported. No barrel bushing means tighter lockup and easier disassembly.
- Coyote Brown Cerakote: Corrosion-resistant and low-glare. Holds up to holster wear and matches the tactical/competition aesthetic.
Who It’s For
Competition shooters who want a 9mm 1911 with factory compensation and double-stack capacity without sending a slide off to a machine shop. Also fits law enforcement officers or serious defensive shooters who train with high round counts and want a flat-shooting, optics-ready platform.
Pros / Cons
- Pro: Factory comp and optics cut save you $300+ in after-milling costs.
- Pro: Coyote Brown finish is durable and hides carbon residue well.
- Pro: Two magazine capacity options let you run 17-round for limited divisions or 20-round for open practice.
- Con: The polymer grip module can feel blocky to shooters with smaller hands; aftermarket grip modules are available but add cost.

FAQ
Does the Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy Comp come with a red dot?
No. The slide is optics-ready with a removable cover plate, but a red-dot sight is not included. You’ll need to purchase one separately and mount it using the appropriate adapter plate.
Will the Prodigy Comp feed hollow points reliably?
Yes, in our experience the ramped bull barrel and fully supported chamber feed most 124-grain and 147-grain hollow points without issues. As with any new pistol, run a 200-round break-in with ball ammo first.
Can I use standard 1911 holsters with this pistol?
No. The double-stack grip width (about 1.5″ at the widest) and the compensator require a holster specifically molded for the Springfield Prodigy DS or a similar double-stack 1911/2011. Many competition holster makers (Safariland, Red Hill Tactical) offer Prodigy-specific options.
What is the warranty on the Prodigy Comp?
Springfield Armory provides a limited lifetime warranty to the original purchaser. They also offer a one-year warranty on Cerakote finish against defects.
Is the 1911 DS Prodigy Comp legal in all 50 states?
This pistol ships with two magazines that may exceed capacity limits in states like California, New York, or Massachusetts. Check your local laws before ordering. We ship to all 50 states but cannot modify magazine capacity.
