Since July 2019, South Dakota has allowed adults 18 and older who can legally possess a firearm to carry a concealed pistol without a permit. The state still offers regular, gold card and enhanced permits, which help with reciprocity; the enhanced permit requires age 21 and a training course. You apply at the sheriff's office in your county of residence. Some locations, including courthouses and schools, remain off limits, so check posted rules before you carry.
South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks runs separate East River and West River deer rifle seasons. For 2026, West River runs November 14 through 29 and East River runs November 21 through December 6, with a separate Black Hills season and a statewide archery season from September 1. Muzzleloader deer season follows in December. Most rifle licenses are drawn by unit in the spring lottery. Rifles, shotguns with slugs, handguns and muzzleloaders are legal. Rapid City sits on the edge of the Black Hills National Forest, which has its own deer season separate from the West River rifle season. The GFP Pete Lien and Sons Shooting Sports Complex is just north of town.
Rapid City hunters can chase whitetails and mule deer in the Black Hills and antelope on the prairie within an hour. The state-run shooting complex near Piedmont has ranges out to long distance for sighting in.
